BATTLE MOUNTAIN
NEWSLETTER
May 2008
Message from the Principal
As the school year comes to a close we celebrate the accomplishments of our senior class and prepare to usher in a new ninth grade group. I would like to welcome the new class of 2012, and their families, to the BMHS community. Not lost in the middle are the other underclassmen benefiting from the "Battle Mountain Advantage." (see our BMHS link/brochure). It has been an exciting and productive school year for our current Huskies and we look forward to expanding on the legacy of the 2008 graduating class. As a side note, the current juniors and sophomores will be the last classes attending the existing BMHS facility as the 2010 and 2011graduating groups will finish in the new school being built in Edwards. The official move-in is anticipated for December, 2009 following the first trimester.
Since this is the last full newsletter for the 2007-08 school year, it is appropriate to highlight the many activities and events for May and to inform you of the August plans for the next school year. There will be a June abbreviated newsletter noting any updates, changes, and new information. Please note these events and others mentioned in the counseling section of this newsletter:
As stated in the April newsletter, it is extremely important to stay focused during this time and to finish strong by continuing to attend class, complete school work, and exhibit appropriate behavior. Our current 8th graders and future Huskies are advised to enjoy the last days of your middle school experience. A strong finish will set you up for a great start at Battle Mountain next fall.
I would like to thank all of those responsible for a very successful school year filled with positive experiences and indelible memories. This includes the students, staff, parents, and the local community. Finally, I wish all the best for our seniors and welcome the new ninth grade class. Have a great summer!
Brian Hester

BMHS Substance Abuse
Task Force
On April 23 the BMHS Substance Abuse Task Force, led by Kimberly Rowland, President of the Parent Accountability Committee, submitted a recommendation to the Eagle County School Board, outlining proposed policy changes, a new Student Assistance Program Director position, and a random drug testing plan for extracurricular participation. The recommendation to the Board was a culmination of six months of school and community dialogue and research. The ECS Board anticipates taking final action on the proposal at the upcoming May 14 meeting. Following the decision, all Battle Mountain High School students and their parents will be informed in May as to the policy changes and what this will mean for BMHS students and potential extracurricular participants for the 2008-09 school year.

Health Notice
Attention Ninth Grade Parents
A new requirement for students entering 10th grade is a booster vaccine against whooping cough which is called the TDaP. The Eagle County Nursing Service will offer a clinic here at school to bring current 9th graders into compliance for next school year on May 13th. Look for a permission slip and letter of information in the mail. A $5.00 fee is requested. This great service is offered so parents do not have to take their child to the doctor or health clinic to receive the vaccine. Students who are not in compliance will be excluded from registration and school entry in the fall.
Eagle Valley Driver Training
Summer is approaching quickly and so are many of my students' anniversary dates for permits. I am currently scheduling students for Behind-the-Wheel that attended classes between April and August. Please call if I have not yet contacted you to schedule the 6 hours needed. The driver's test will be administered at no charge.
Small groups are forming through the summer. Four to six students make a comfortable size for an in-home setting. Call to schedule your group. Thirty hour classes will run once a month during the summer. Phone registrations are being accepted now.
Behind the Wheel instruction will be available beginning in June for students not previously signed up for summer driving. Space is limited.
Call Kelly Booker for scheduling or general questions related to new Driver Education.

Girls Soccer Team
The 2008 Battle Mountain High School Girls Soccer team enters May in the midst of a successful season on several fronts. We have a wide range of abilities, from Emily LyBarger (who has signed an athletic scholarship to play soccer at University of Louisiana-Monroe this fall) to several girls participating in their first athletic experience. The girls have been training in Edwards and have been able to squeeze themselves in amongst the youth teams, lacrosse teams and other high schools all competing for use of the only artificial surface in the county. The need for an additional one at the new BMHS is obvious, given the early start for spring sports in Colorado and the heavy use.
The Varsity team stands at 14-0 as of April 30 and is hoping to repeat as league champions. This would mark the second time that both Battle Mt.'s boys and girls were league champions in the same year. The playoffs take place in May and the team is hoping to represent Battle Mt. well. We are particularly proud to see alumni attending college, some of them as the first in their family to do so (Erik Garcia, Tanya and Gladys Solis spring to mind.) Alison Edwards is ranked #1 in the senior class and represents the student athlete ideal well in the classroom. This will also be the third year in a row that Battle Mt. has placed an athlete into a Division 1 soccer program. Morgan Wallace (Elon) and Julia Burnett (CU) preceded Emily LyBarger, Conference Player of the Year in 2007, into Division 1 athletics. We are particularly proud of our seniors who have amassed outstanding achievements in various sports and are heading off to colleges such as CU, SMU, Middlebury, Wyoming, CSU and others.
Soccer is alive and well at Battle Mountain. Come and see a playoff game!
Shakespeare Club
This Spring's trip to England was also an artistic success. The students learned how to use the London Tube and how to dress for English weather. They visited the renovated Globe Theater, Windsor Castle (yes, the Queen was in residence!), Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath, Oxford and Stratford. We walked a lot, toured a lot, shopped, ate a variety of cuisine and enjoyed the English Tea Time on a regular basis! The reunion/picture session will be Tuesday, April 29th at 6:30 pm in the BMHS library. Students and parents who are interested in the 2010 England trip should do the following: Talk to Ms. Foster about fund raising which CAN start this summer at the EVCF Rummage Sale (just sign your name as "Shakespeare Club" on the sign-in sheet). There will be an opportunity next fall as well as an initial meeting next February for students who are interested in going to England. Planning ahead is a wonderful thing! Contact Ms. Foster for details. [ mailto:sfoster@eagleschools.net ]sfoster@eagleschools.net
BMHS Players
The premiere of THE BOOGIE MAN by Steve Szindler was an artistic success! While we didn't have the numbers we expected, those who came were delighted with the cast portrayals, the singing, the dancing and the overall ambiance created by the cast and crew. We also said goodbye to seniors who have been involved with the BMHS Players for all four years as well as those who had just joined us: Alexa Corcoran, Emma Szindler, Sarah White, Pearl Burkham, Andrea Sanchez, Meagan Houghton, Jake Sheppard, Charlie Tedstrom, Byron Pottorff, Sean Pack and Graham Bultemeier. Next Season.....Ms. Foster will be choosing the Fall Show prior to the end of this year--a murder mystery or comedy/murder mystery TBA; however, next year's musical is a revival of GREASE which was last presented on the BMHS stage 18 years ago. Director Foster, Musical Director Steve Szindler and Choreographer Maria Barry are excited to bring GREASE back to the BMHS stage. More details later!

BMHS FBLA Competitors Qualify for Nationals
As 2,300 Colorado FBLA members descended upon Vail on April 19, Battle Mountain FBLA sent 12 of its own to the 45th annual State Leadership Conference and Competition. Following two days of competition, leadership workshops, and keynote speakers, the event culminated with the awards ceremony. Qualifying for the National Leadership Conference by placing 2nd in the Global Business team event were BMHS Seniors Hana Warmenhoven, Kaleigh Armitage, and Cassidy Rosen. The event consisted of an objective written test and the presentation of a case study to a panel of judges. The Web Site Development team of Senior Ryan Walker and Junior Charles Gladitsch earned 6th place in the state, and Junior Anna Schmitt took 4th place in Marketing. Hana, Cassidy, and Kaleigh will compete at the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia from June 24-30.
Additional BMHS competitors included Senior Andrea Kedrowski, Junior Lizzy Gerken, Sophomores Jessie Stern and Alyssa Evans, and Freshmen Rachel Edwards and Michael Jones. Advisers Nancy Lindbloom and Dave Niewoonder chaperoned the group and were very proud of the responsible, professional manner in which the students conducted themselves.
Congratulations to all competitors and good luck at Nationals.
Important End of the School Year Information from the Guidance Office
Registration for 2008-2009
The counselors have met individually with each student to plan their course selections for the 08-09 school year. The student planning guide is available in the guidance office and online at www.bmhs.eagleschools.net. Parents can view student's course choices on PowerSchool (under Class Registration and View Future Courses.) Schedules will be distributed at registration in August.
We encourage our students to take Dual Enrollment courses. They can test into these courses by taking the Accucplacer, ACT or SAT. We have been giving the Accuplacer to many students to determine eligibility for CMC college classes. If students have not yet tested in on the Accuplacer at BMHS they have several options. They may contact Carol Carlson at CMC to take the test. They can take the Accuplacer at CMC on May 15th at 1PM or 5:30PM. They may also register for the June 7th SAT date by May 6th online (May 15th with a late fee) at http://www.collegeboard.com, or the June 14th ACT by May 9th at http://www.act.org (late fee until May 23rd). Juniors may test in if they do well on the ACT they took April 23rd at BMHS. Please contact your counselor with questions.
May 7th, 6:30 PM in The Auditorium is Registration Night for new Dual Enrollment students. Please attend to learn about the program and complete the registration forms for next year. Many of our students are graduating with 1 year or more of college credit earned at BMHS through our Dual Enrollment program with CMC.
Link Crew is coming to BMHS! Link Crew is a successful mentoring program at thousands of high schools across the nation. Forty-five upperclassmen will be involved in the orientation and mentoring of our incoming freshman class. Applications are being accepted, and we are looking for more boys!
