Interested in college classes in high school?

Listen for announcements for the Accuplacer test to qualify! Sign up for testing in the guidance office. You can also call CMC at 569-2900 to take the test there.

Pre-enrollment for next year's classes will take place after Spring Break in April.

SENIORS!

Come by and see the scholarships that are posted in the guidance office as well as on the website. You should also be getting periodic email from our office. If not, email your counselor. Local scholarship applications will be coming in and will be due in March. Visit www.fastweb.com which is also a great resource. Confused about financial aid? We have information that we can pass on to you.  Just have your student come by and pick up a copy of Get a Jump Start.

Yes, the end is in sight, but it is not here yet. It is important to remain engaged in school until the end of the year. Students taking Dual Credit classes are in college. Colleges will often ask that you take placement tests over the summer and you want to be as well prepared as possible. Colleges can also revoke acceptances if you have not maintained a level of academic rigor. You don't want to take a class in college that you could have taken in high school.

Inexperience and Winter Roads:
A Risky Combination for Teen Drivers

It's no secret that teen driving is risky.  Compound the matter by factoring in Colorado's severe winter and the risk can become deadly.  Parents can and do play a vital role in ensuring their new teen driver is fully prepared for all situations, especially winter driving.  Practice driving with your teen as often as possible, even when conditions aren't ideal.

Ice and Snow Driving Tips

  • Slow down.  Bridges and overpasses freeze first; reduce speed and avoid sudden changes in direction.
  • Keep windows clear.
  • Keep your speed steady and slow-but not so slow that your car gets stuck in deeper snow.
  • Use brakes cautiously.  Abrupt braking can cause brake lock-up and cause you to lose steering control.

The Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs offers a full range of winter driving programs for all abilities, from the novice to the seasoned professional.  Visit winterdrive.com for more information.

Visit coteendriver.com for more information about your teen learning to drive.

On Sunday April 6th, the RMACAC College Fair is being held from 1-4 PM in the Ritchie Center at the University of Denver. There will be over 150 colleges attending as well as breakout sessions open to the public. This is the ONE College Fair held in the spring in Colorado. Graphing Calculators
Camcorder
Spilled Ink literary magazine
Training for Mentoring Program
Upfront magazine

Math Club

Battle Mountain Math Club meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.  The club creates an environment for students to receive help with their math homework or prepare for math exams.  We will encourage students who are strong in math to help their fellow students for volunteer-hour credit.  No commitment necessary - students may show up whenever they choose and for however long they like.  At least one of the many talented math teachers at BMHS will be available as a resource.

This club will be held in Room 100, near the gym at BMHS.

Contact Daisy Matthews at daisy.matthews@eagleschools.net or at her office phone (970) 328-7930 for further details.  If you are interested in having your student(s) participate in this after-school club, encourage them to seek out Ms. Matthews before or after school.

Support Darfur

This year, StuCo's community service project supports the STAND organization (Students Against Genocide).  Stuco will host a Darfur Benefit Dinner soon (date and time TBD.)  They will also sell T-Shirts to raise money for Darfur.  The money will go to STAND, which supports victims of the genocide.  The T-Shirts (shown above) will be sold for $15.  If you would like a T-Shirt, fill out a form at the front fffice at BMHS, or send Sage Nelson an email with your name and size to svoliter@eagleschools.net. The shirts are 100% cotton so they will shrink.

Thank you for supporting Student Council, and more importantly, the victims of the genocide in Darfur.

Principal's Corner

It is difficult to believe that we are already over halfway through the school year.  This is the time when teachers, administrators, students, and parents are involved in evaluating our progress made in attaining the achievement goals and a supportive learning environment.  This information, whether in the form of reports, grades, survey responses, or authentic performance, is used to make adjustments for the remainder of the school year and to plan for the succeeding year.
If you attended the January 28 Parent-Teacher conferences, you received the Colorado School Accountability Report (SAR) for our school.  We are proud to report that Battle Mountain High School improved from a previous "Average" rating for 2004-06 to a "High" ranking for this past year.  This puts BMHS in the top 33% of high schools in the state based on the CSAP and ACT standardized evaluations.  An example of student progress, as measured by authentic performance, is the recent state speech and debate meet in which 28 BMHS students qualified and competed, culminating in two Husky state champions - Sean Pack and Aaron Szindler.
As a result of last year's student academic results, as well as parent, student, and staff survey results on school performance, three major areas are currently being emphasized and monitored:  English Language Learning, the ninth-grade educational services and transition, and the relevance of our upper grade curriculum and scheduling.  All three of these areas are being reported, tracked, and discussed with staff and the BMHS Accountability Committee.  This group of parents revised and administered the annual survey this past month, via a group email to parents, resulting in 150 responses.  In addition, a staff committee is conducting research for the purpose of improving upon "best practices" for ninth-grade instruction and services, including eighth-to-ninth grade transition.
In supporting improvement of a school climate for learning, the BMHS Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force was formed in response to the November public forum.  Comprised of school, athletic, law enforcement, parent and community representatives,
the task force is meeting this spring for the purpose of submitting a proposal to revise the district policy regarding drug/alcohol offenses, drug testing, and corresponding student assistance (counseling) opportunities.
We appreciate your input and support in regard to these mid-year improvement efforts.  If you have immediate questions or concerns, please do not wait to respond on surveys or as part of parent-teacher conference events.  Call or email us right away.

Thursday, March 6, 2008, 6:30-8:30pm   for parents & students

EagleCountyHealthServicesBuilding (Behind the Edwards Post Office)

Do gifted kids do poorly on purpose?  How much of their underachievement is in response to the educational system not knowing what to do with them?  How can parents and kids work together to advocate for the necessary changes to our local schools?  In the meantime, what can we do to help the individual gifted student who is underachieving?  Dr. Jim Delisle is the author of "When Gifted Kids Don't Have All the Answers" and a leading expert in helping kids find their path to self-advocacy & Gifted survival.

"Gifted Kids in Your Classroom: Strategies to Engage & Motivate Learners"  #EDU-700, for teachers, counselors & all who work with gifted students.

ColoradoMountainCollege, Edwards Campus, Mar 4, 6:00-9:00pm  - .3 CEU available

Of all the kids in your classroom the ones who are most often misunderstood and underserved are gifted students.  In this presentation you will learn about the intellectual and emotional characteristics of gifted children and teens, with practical suggestions for working with them effectively in your classroom.

BMHS gifted students are invited to a "Meeting of the Minds" session with Jim on Thursday March 6th.  See Ms. Wilson for times & information.

SENG Parents' Group forming in Eagle County, with Dr. Kathie Goulet and Jane West, LPC

In 1981, SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of Gifted) established guidelines for SENG-Model Parent Support Groups.  In communities around the country, parents of gifted children are invited to participate in a seven-week series to discuss the social and emotional needs of their children, and the parenting issues related to those needs.  The emphasis is on positive aspects of parenting, avoiding power struggles, and helping gifted children learn appropriate life skills while enhancing the parent/child relationship and parent self esteem.

Scholarships are available through a grant from ECSD for parents of gifted students who would like to participate, but may not be able to afford the entire fee.

For cost & scheduling info: Kathleen Goulet, Clinical Psychologist 970- 926-5377
